Meet Sheelah:

Sheelah has over four years of experience working in UC Berkeley's Undergraduate Admissions office. She graduated Cal in 2016 with a B.S. in Genetics and Plant Biology, and is now pursuing a Master's in Environmental Health Science at Hopkins' Bloomberg School of Public Health. During her time at Berkeley, she was a member of the Biology Scholars Program, and the Director of Speech at Berkeley.

Purpose: Here from Empowerly parents, Leslie and Shilpa, about their experience successfully leading their children through the college admissions process. They’ll be talking about what the college admissions process entails, some best practices for supporting your child through the process, and what parts of the process they were directly involved in. For any and all questions about how to line your child up for a successful college application journey, these two are the perfect resource!

Meet Leslie:

Leslie has 13 years of experience guiding her four children through high school and the college admission process. Her children were accepted to many top 20 universities including Yale, Princeton, UPenn, Dartmouth, Duke, Vanderbilt, Stanford, and Notre Dame, and they continued their education at top medical and business schools.

Meet Shilpa:

Shilpa completed her residency at UVM and practices medicine in Southern California. She had to balance working full time and raising children. She was instrumental in helping her kids discover extracurriculars, win awards, start clubs, and obtain scholarships. Her daughters attended UC Berkeley, completed masters, and have gone on to pursue successful careers in business and medicine.

Meet Madeleine:

Madeleine is a recent UC Berkeley alum who graduated with high honors in both English and Media Studies in 2018. While on campus, she published her writing in multiple journals and won outstanding departmental recognition from faculty. In addition to being a nationally competitive speaker, she loves reading and writing in her own time and now leads Empowerly’s editing team.

Mentor Chat: Following the Medical Track

Purpose: We’ve invited a college counselor with expertise in pre-med admissions to share more information with you about the classes, extracurriculars, and prep work needed for this academic path. Rajika will talk about the expectations for high schoolers looking to be pre-med or related majors and what it is like going through college preparing for medical school.

Meet Rajika:

Rajika studied Public Health at UC Berkeley and is currently completing her MD/MPH at University of Miami School of Medicine. She has done a plethora of research, domestic and international volunteering, and internships at HealthTech companies. She looks forward to helping students on the pre-med path and is passionate about helping students prepare for career in the medical field.

Meet Alfredo:

Alfredo is currently a third-year medical student at the University of Miami’s 4 year MD/MPH program. He grew up in the predominantly Hispanic city of Hialeah, Florida before attending MIT to obtain a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. While at MIT, Alfredo worked as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and collaborated with peers and administration to improve mental health on campus. Throughout college and medical school, Alfredo returned to his high school to motivate students to think big about their college aspirations and to speak about life in the medical field so far. He graduated a semester early from MIT and returned to his hometown so that he could tutor at Florida International University and work with students in his high school before starting medical school. He is currently an interviewer for MIT applicants in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and he continues to enjoy speaking with and giving feedback and advice to those applying to universities or medical schools.
